Flocking Fantastic

Six months ago I picked up the Techno Toy Tuning Trunk Panels, unfortunately they’ve been sitting on a shelf this whole time.

I finally have the materials, time, and the tools dug out to put these in so lets get to this.

First step is to make some copies out of ABS plastic.  Because the T3 panels are so thin I had to space them up a bit to work with the router bit.  Some scrap wood and some 3M trim adhesive, and I was set to make some copies.

One down, and one to go.

With both copies done, it was time to address one of the issues I had with the T3 panels.

No provision for the factory trunk light!  I’m sure more than 99% of the people that will purchase these don’t have or need the light, but I had it, so I wanted to keep it.  I used the copy panel to drill mark and then drill the trial hole.  Since I didn’t screw it up, I went ahead and transferred it to the original panel and drilled it with a cutter so I didn’t tear up the thin metal.

After deciding to use the optional shoulder belt bolt locations I needed to make a couple of transfer screws in the appropriate sizes. Apparently the seat belt bolt size of  M11 x 1.25 (which is impossible to find) actually matches really damn close to a 7/16 x 20tpi.  While I wouldn’t use these for actual seat belts, it was perfect for my needs.

The backing panels had to be flat in order to mount mate to the T3 panels, so I 3d printed spacers for the back of them to allow the bolts to sit flush with the panel top.

Now I could have put the panels in, but as attractive as the black wrinkle finish is, it isn’t quite right for what I want.  Most of the other Toyota’s of this era that I have owned had a flocked style trunk panel. So it was time to start flocking!  I ordered some flocking and a flocker and got to work.

The flocking came with a color matched glue which we brushed on to the first panel.

Then you use the flocker to flock the panel.

With the first one looking good we moved on to the second.

With both panels done it was just a matter of letting the glue fully set.  Unfortunately by the time they will be dry, I’ll be packing the trunk for Toyotafest so you may have to wait until then for installed photos.
